I am sitting here looking out at the rain pissing down, and thinking to myself that this has been the worst summer for ages. I have only done half the mileage I did last year, because the sun has hardly shown face except when I am at work.

The weather forecast said that the weather would be nice today, and I was going to go to the TVRCC club meeting. Unless the weather improves dramatically in the next hour, the car will be staying at home.

Instead I am thinking about all the jobs I meant to do but haven't, especially finishing cleaning and painting the rest of the chassis, and then applying Waxoyl before the winter.

My attention has been diverted by the need to fix a sodding Metro which failed its MOT big style in August and which needed to be totally dismantled (almost) just to replace two brake pipes and a handbrake cable.

Only a couple of easy (famous last words) bits to do at the front now though.

I must rustproof the TVR though.

Still too wet for a drive, so I decide that, since I can't get my fault code reader to work, I'll try rebooting the ECU to erase the memory. The correct way to do this is to use the fault code reader, or short across two of the pins. This involves removing the centre console, the footwell trim, to reach the ecu, and then strategically placing a piece of wire across two terminals.

The alternative way is to disconnect the battery for 10 minutes.

No prizes for guessing which one I went for!

It's dry! It's actually not raining!

An opportunity not to be missed. Roof off, a quick look under the bonnet to check the water and oil etc, and off we go! The car starts first time, and runs perfectly even from cold. As it warms up, the engine idle speeds sits exactly right. The car is far more drivable, runs perfectly and sounds fantastic! The new throttle pot and idle speed valve, plus the computer reboot, seem to have done the trick.

The drive itself is excellent. Although dry and bright, it's quite cold so even with a hat and gloves on, it's quite invigorating. Worth it though.
