:: Diary - February 2016 ::

:: Tuesday, February 16, 2016 ::

The rain went off today and the snow has melted, and the temperature staggered briefly above 0 degrees. All of that is a reminder that summer will soon be here! More importantly, Adrian has almost completed his period of preliminary procrastination and has started thinking about planning to look for his trickle charger as the first step towards getting around to connecting it up to his car just in time to make sure that it doesn't have quite enough charge to start the bloody thing.

So, winter job no 1 - the steering wheel has once again grown a fine layer of mould. I line the wheel up straight then take it off, and then brush it with mould killer, dry it off, then wash it down. I take it into the house to dry off.

It's a start!

Other points noted:
Roof panels are falling to bits again
Rear offside tyre looks a bit soft
Still need to fix (free up) the heater controls - they do work, but very stiff
General tidy up required
Service needed!

I'm going to look at a site today for work, and I'll be passing the best car trimmer in the area. So I decide to take the roof panels in and save myself any more grief.

The panels are in the boot. The boot is locked. To open it, you put the ignition on, and press a button. Easy-Peasy. Except the key won't turn cos the steering is locked, and is obviously pressing against the pawl. So you jiggle the wheel, key turns, easy eh? Not when you don't have a steering wheel, it isn't. Now, it would take 60 seconds to go in the house, get the wheel, bring it out, put it on and free the key - but why go to all that trouble when you can boot the front of a wheel to take the tension off, and turn the key then?

Having saved 57 seconds of my life (at my age, they all count), I load up the roof panels in the boot, and drop in to see him. Once he has stopped laughing at the state of my handiwork, he says he can sort them no problem (of course) although he's busy and it might take a few weeks (mainly, I think, to scrape off the shit I have already stuck on). As long as it's ready for April, that's fine. I forgot to ask him a price though!

So that's two steps further on!

With the steering wheel de-moulded and dried out, today I cleaned it with a proper letter cleaner, and then added some rather care cream to bring up a nice sheen, and to protect it, of course.Then I refit the wheel to the steering column and tighten it up.

This merely demonstrates that the seats are manky and also need a good clean…

I’ve also installed a new security system. I think I’ll get away with it if not for those pesky kids.
